Franklin Ellis began in Nottingham in 1993. Our main office is based on The Ropewalk, a short walk from Nottingham City Centre. We were first located at No. 28, before migrating up the hill to No. 16 and finally settling at No. 5, the Old Pumphouse, where we have been since 2011.
The Old Pumphouse reflects our devotion to conserving the heritage of our city and is an impressive space to meet with our local Clients. It is currently undergoing an internal refurbishment with the aim of further reflecting our values and incorporating new ways of working.

- Abby McCaySenior Architect
- Agnieszka Youssefi-TitchenArchitectural Assistant
What do you do at FEA?
I work as a Part 2 Architectural Assistant on a variety of hotel projects in the office, looking at all aspects of the job, from the external shell to the interior design details.
Why do you love it?
Every day brings on new challenges I haven't seen before. Solving them creates a satisfying feeling of self-improvement on a daily basis and it never gets boring!
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?
I would always like to keep designing and creating - it makes me happy when things are in harmony together. Graphic Designer would be my next choice as I especially enjoy creating visually inspirational designs.
- Angelica RodriguezBIM Manager
What do you do at FEA?
My role is BIM Manager, responsible for the development, application and curation of procedures that are in line with BIM principles and aim to help with the production of information. I’m in charge of training staff in the use of different software, mainly Revit and Lumion.
Why do you love it?
It is a very challenging position; it encourages me to be creative finding solutions to make all our processes better every day. Also, it gives me the chance to share with all the different teams in the office.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in architecture?
I would probably work in something history or technology related. I think I would be either an historian or a software engineer.
- Ben DudleyDirector
What do you do at FEA?
I head up a team focused on hospitality and leisure projects. The team comprises architects, interior designers and architectural technologists.
Why do you love it?
As an architect, I’m passionate about buildings and the built environment. In my job, I love the buzz of the office and being part of a big team of specialist designers and constructors working together to deliver complex buildings. It’s a great feeling to look up at a newly constructed building and know I played a part in bringing that building into being. The hotel and leisure sector is rooted in the guest experience inside the building, on making people feel comfortable, and providing a ‘wow factor’. Our clients are really excited about our projects and are always appreciative which is fantastic.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?
My children are currently travelling, which makes my wife and I want to visit some far-flung places like south-east Asia. But there is still so much to see in the UK, so perhaps I ought to be upgrading from leisurely rambles in the Peak District and Snowdonia to some more serious hiking in the Highlands!
- Bobby ElstonArchitectural Assistant
- Chris DixonSenior Associate | BIM Lead
What do you do at FEA?
I’m an associate, job running architect and BIM Manager for the practice. The BIM role extends to include oversight of our Document Management System (DMS) and Project Information System (PIM), as well as staff training on all matters digital. As an associate, I’m involved in steering the practice on technical and regulatory matters, such as enhancing our procedures for fire safety in design following the tragic Grenfell fire. My recent architectural projects include the mixed-use New Walk Place in Leicester, iHub Derby innovation centre, and Talbot Street student accommodation.
Why do you love it?
I wanted to be an architect since high school because it combined my art and drawing skills with my love of anything technical. I still can’t get enough of it, and will happily watch Grand Designs/Ugly House etc after a 12-hour shift in the office – much to my wife’s despair.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?
Anything else technical or web/software-related I suppose. I enjoy UI/UX design and I used to design websites back in the late 90s, including the national Green Party’s site at one point.
- Connor HorganArchitectural Technologist
- Deeps ShahCompany Accountant
What do you do at FEA?
I am the partnership accountant for the practice, and I have worked for Franklin Ellis for over 15 years. I look after all aspects of the finance for the business, including control of the accounting function, financial reporting, and cash management to name a few aspects.
Why do you love it?
I love working with numbers and that there is generally a right answer. I can choose my preferred working style and every working day is different, which means I am never bored! Accounting tells a story about the business. It gives insights as to what has been achieved and what the future might hold. This in turn can impact on future business decisions for the better.
What would you be doing if not?
I have and still am interested in technology so probably something to do with that.
- Ivan TomasevicSenior Architect
What do you do at FEA?
I have enjoyed a varied and stimulating career at FEA. I work primarily in the education team which is a sector I feel strongly about. In addition to my role as an architect, I'm also responsible within the practice for photography, website management and I am part of our visualisation team. I'm our resident quiz master and enjoy testing the teams' knowledge each year at Christmas.
Why do you love it?
Architecture combines all the things I want and need in a profession. Working alongside intelligent and interesting people, using my creative talents, solving problems, and a having rich variety of experiences day to day are what I love most.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?
I'd like to think I'd still be working in a creative industry, possibly photography, graphic design, music or carpentry.
- Jeremy CrawfordSenior Architectural Technologist
What do you do at FEA?
Having spent many years as a job runner I now provide technical support throughout the practice working across all sectors developing construction details for major and minor projects alike.
This may involve working alone, working in a team or just providing help and support as a point of contact to others where needed.
Why do you love it?
Quite simply seeing a completed building constructed from drawings I produced is still a thrill.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architectural technologist?
I’m not sure I have ever wanted to do anything else but over recent years I have become increasingly interested in photography, so this might be an alternative if I could make it pay.
- Joao RamosArchitect
What do you do at FEA?
I work as an architectural assistant on several projects, ranging from student accommodation to office buildings, from planning to detailing. Why do you love it?
I’m passionate about architecture, particularly the thought process. Architecture is problem solving, and is that challenge that gets me going. What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?
I would want to continue designing and creating things. I would say product design would be my next choice with emphasis on motoring and engineering. - Joe TaylorDesign Lead
What do you do at FEA?
I started at FEA in 1999 and in the 20 years I have been here I have been involved in most aspects of the practice. Since becoming a partner I have been more focused on developing new commissions through to Stage 3 before they are passed over to delivery teams within the office.
Why do you love it?
Every day brings a new challenge and the architect’s role at the heart of the design team means that we have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the design and construction process. This means that the job is varied from day to day so we are continually engaged in working with the team on solving problems and exploring ideas to improve our designs. We have a very strong team and a dynamic working environment which is great to be a part of.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?
If architecture had not worked out for me, I had always thought that I would join the police force but I’m not sure I have the nerve for that now!
- John ArmstrongSenior Architectural Technician
What do you do at FEA?
I’m a Senior Architectural Technician and have been working for Franklin Ellis since 2002. In that time, I’ve worked in a technical capacity supporting the design team on a wide variety of projects within the residential, commercial and education sectors. My primary role is to provide technical assistance to the Project Lead, producing drawing information and managing project data.
Why do you love it?
Technical drawing was one of my favourite classes at comprehensive school and I’ve always been interested in buildings and the technology of how they are built so architectural technology was a good fit for my interests and skill set.
Whether it’s a new build or renovation works, my passion is finding technical solutions to the inherent problems of a project.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architectural technician?
I suspect I would still be operating within the construction industry. I think I could use my knowledge and DIY skills in a practical sense, so maybe with a bit of formal training I could have a go at bricklaying or plastering.
- Katy HamJunior Interior Designer
- Lucy PerkinsArchitectural Assistant
What do you do at FEA?
My current role is working as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant, working alongside the Associates on large schemes and multiple feasibilities. FEA has so far been a great place for me to learn and gain a true insight of what it takes to work in this Industry.
Why do you love it?
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architectural assistant?
- Luke TurnerAssociate
What do you do at FEA?
As an Associate I manage a small team on a number of predominantly residential projects, including the luxury riverside development on the former Park Yacht Club site in Colwick. In addition to my project running role, I also offer technical guidance and support on projects across the office, advising on legislation, specification, construction detailing and technical compliance.
Why do you love it?
I enjoy having variation in my role here, and having the freedom to develop and progress.
What would be doing if you weren’t involved in architecture?
I have always been a relatively active person and I am a keen cyclist so I would probably like to explore a career outdoors.
- Mak JohalArchitectural Assistant
What do you do at FEA?
My current role is working as a Part 2 Architectural Assistant, currently working on a large residential scheme. Using the wealth of experience, here at FEA, it will be a great place for me to learn and gain the knowledge required for my Part 3 preparations.
Why do you love it?
It is a great feeling knowing how you can positively affect peoples lives through a well thought design. The drive for me is understanding how might we tackle each project with a sustainable approach to ensure we address the key global issues we face today.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architectural assistant?
I quite enjoy taking photographs at family occasions, so that may have been a career to pursue and have also previously enjoyed working as a sports coach, which is a strong passion of mine.
- Mark NicholArchitectural Technician
What do you do at FEA?
I work as an architectural technician liaising with the project architect on a variety of educational and residential schemes. I produce working drawings and schedules using Revit and AutoCAD.
Why do you love it?
Every project I work on is different and constantly provides me with new challenges.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architectural technician?
I would probably be a personal fitness trainer, or I would do something to do with gardening. I like to be physically active and I love the great outdoors.
- Matthew BrantonManaging Director
What do you do at FEA?
I head up all operations within the Practice and run the residential and retail teams. I have wide experience in residential, retail and commercial work, from feasibility and sketch schemes to full detail design and on-site management. I specialise in BIM/CAD and sustainable building design.
Why do you love it?
I enjoy the fast-paced environment and huge variety. It’s always interesting and rewarding to work alongside developers, contractors and the design teams, including of course our talented FEA team, to create amazing, sustainable buildings to be enjoyed and appreciated for many years to come. Managing, supporting and continuously researching and updating the tools required for FEA to provide the best services possible is also rewarding.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an Architect?
That’s hard to imagine but definitely something technical and challenging.
- Matthew KirkAssociate | Architect
What do you do at FEA?
I am a job running associate architect. I have a responsibility to realise the building designs of the company from concept through to finished construction on site, whilst holding a role to help manage other members of the team, and ensure the goals of the company are achieved.
Why do you love it?
The strategy in the design. There are a great number of considerations that must be identified and resolved. These range in scale from city wide at the planning stage, to nuts and bolts during construction. It is the process of guiding all these considerations and seeing them resolve in an actual building that I find satisfying. When relaxing I play games. Keeping my brain occupied keeps me relaxed.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?
I always wanted to be an architect. When I was young I would draw pictures and build Lego whilst listening to music. I briefly considered artificial limb technology research. I have always been alarmed by the impact such a disaster can have on a life, almost to the point of it being a phobia, so felt I might be able to help someway.
- Monika MalachowskaInterior Designer
What do you do at FEA?
I work as a Interior Designer on a variety of hospitality projects, focusing on FF&E selection, developing detailed design, sourcing finishes, creating layouts, preparing presentations and concept mood boards.
Why do you love it?
As an Interior Designer I love the opportunity to be creative everyday at work. The process of designing spaces always brings challenges that helps me improve my skills and expand my knowledge.
What would you be doing if you weren't an interior designer?
I would definitely still want to be involved in designing, art and maybe even cuisine. Probably my next choice would be an art conservationist or a professional Chef and own a fine dining restaurant.
- Mrugesh LacmaneArchitectural Assistant
- Nina Roberts-JamesInterior Design Lead
- Oliver HigginsAssociate Director & Senior Visualiser
What do you do at FEA?
I am currently Senior Architect and Job Runner at Franklin Ellis. I have been at FEA since 2005 and have enjoyed a wide variety of projects ranging from pre-planning feasibility work to large scale developments. I also head the award-winning Architectural Visualisation team here, delivering photo realistic imagery ahead of on-site works.
Why do you love it?
I have always had a passion for design from a young age, but equally enjoy the practical side of construction. Architecture was the perfect balance of these skills and provides a variety of opportunities within the umbrella of construction.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?
If I am not designing, I am building. I could not limit myself to a particular trade and enjoy all aspects of on-site work. But if I had to select just one, I would be a carpenter.
- Ricky CamSenior Architect
What do you do at FEA?
I’m an Architect Associate at Franklin Ellis Architects, following promotion earlier this year. I’ve been here over 13 years now. I joined as a job-runner initially for apartment projects and have broadened my job-running experience here at Franklin Ellis across other sectors – mainly hotels, student accommodation and educational facilities. I’m responsible for leading a team which will vary in size according to the scale of the project and the work stage we are taking the project through. My primary day to day focus as a job-runner is usually on keeping one large project moving forward. Alongside this, as an Associate, I work with the other associates and the partners in looking ahead to where we need to be heading and how we can improve what we do.
Why do you love it?
I enjoy the challenges of problem-solving and applying creativity to the issues raised in any development project and working these through in collaboration with other people. The nature of the problems posed is constantly changing through the course of a project so the challenge is a different one every day. It can be about interpreting the needs of a stakeholder one day and resolving a difficult assembly of components the next day. It’s always a fresh challenge.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?
I arrived at architecture through my enjoyment of art and craft-based subjects at school. So in an alternate universe I would be designing album covers or trying to master technique in oil painting or sculpture - trying to emulate some of the work of my favourite artists.
- Sarah BoxfordAssociate Director
What do you do at FEA?
I joined FEA in 2003 as a student and since then I have enjoyed a varied and stimulating career with the practice. The continued support of FEA has allowed me to develop from a student into a well-rounded architect and team leader. I have worked on a wide variety of schemes, including residential, education, healthcare and commercial. The highlight of my career so far has been designing and delivering a hospice in a hospital in Grantham, the first of its kind in the UK, which won Best End of Life Care Building at the Building Better Healthcare Awards.
Why do you love it?
I love the simple joy of knowing that something I have sketched by hand or on a computer can be built and have a positive influence on people’s lives.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?
Since an early age I’ve always loved building and creating things, so I’d most likely be in another design orientated career such as model making, or gardening and landscape design.
- Valentina AldescuArchitect
What do you do at FEA?
I currently work as an architect at FEA, having joined in September 2021. I have been working on master planning as well as delivering some large residential schemes. I am also working on an exciting student accommodation scheme in Nottingham City Centre.
Why do you love it?
I love to work with people and be part of a professional team. I think architecture is a continuous learning process and I enjoy having the freedom to develop and experience new things. I love that I will never get into a routine. I am a creative person and my ambition has always been to work on things that will stand the test of time. I like history and visiting old monuments, learning about their story and how architecture reflects society’s beliefs and values. Designing a building is always about people, the context and finding the right balance.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?
I would probably have chosen a job involving creativity and the arts. Probably a furniture designer or a painting restorer. I like to do oil painting in my free time, on canvas or glass or any surface that appeals to me.
- Viktorija PerrySenior Interior Designer
What do you do at FEA?
I am a Senior Interior Designer working with a team on hospitality, office and leisure projects from initial concept development stages to drawing packages and delivery on site. Liaising with clients and contractors, FF&E selection, visualisations and technical detailing are big part of my job.
Why do you love it?
I really enjoy the creative side of the profession because each project is unique with its own challenges, and how varied the tasks are depending on the design stage. I love concept development journey creating an authentic experience and atmosphere that instantly connects with a user and the place where it is located.
What would you be doing if you weren't an interior designer?
The other professional careers I would consider is psychology - I am really fascinated how human mind works; or a film director – I would love to be able to bring a story to an immersive visual form that has a power to change viewer’s perspective to life.

What do you do at FEA?
I’m one of the founding partners here at FEA. For over 25 years I have been devoting my energies to help develop our practice into the successful business it is today. Within the practice I have an involvement at design stage on all significant commissions within the Practice, providing over 35 years of experience in design and delivery.
Why do you love it?
I love high quality, engaging and functional architecture. This is what we strive to achieve here at Franklin Ellis.
What do you enjoy doing outside of Franklin Ellis?
I am involved in local politics and education, civic trust and building conservation, charity fund raising, and am a member of the local Methodist church. My spare time is currently focused on travel and gardening with the occasional use of an easel.
- Ian BurgessDirector
What do you do at FEA?
I am a Director and I work on a range of high-profile schemes across the country within the leisure industry with a particular focus on hotels. Recently, I have been working on completing the exciting extensions to a DoubleTree by Hilton and two Holiday Inn Express hotels with the FEA team. We are also just about to start onsite in Chester on a 75-bedroom new build Indigo Hotel and in Barrow in Furness on a 119-bed Holiday Inn Express hotel – busy busy!
Why do you love it?
Above all I love design but I also enjoy the varied nature of the job. Each day brings different tasks and regularly challenges a different aspect of my expertise. I could be picking a brick colour, drawing a detail for a window, liaising with a planning officer or writing up meeting minutes.
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?
Playing golf, badly. Or, I’d be working in another design-related industry.
- Jon CrabbSenior Associate
What do you do at FEA?
As an associate partner I manage a passionate team who are dedicated to delivering mainly education projects as well as private residential apartment schemes. I am involved from the initial client meeting through to completion, which involves setting the project up, sketch designs and overseeing the successful completion of the project within my team. My primary role as the project progresses is to ensure that the clients expectations are met, that the project is resourced appropriately and targets are met.
Why do you love it?
Every day, every project and every challenge is different, which keeps me alert and means I am always learning something new. For example, when it comes to education projects I could be designing anything from general teaching spaces to specialist science labs, recital halls, sports facilities, boarding accommodation, and dealing with a new build, refurbishment or heritage projects.
What would be doing if you weren’t an architect?
I’d like to think I’d be an international playboy of the western world or a goat herder, whichever comes first.
- Nina Roberts-JamesInterior Design Lead
- Tolu OgunjimiArchitect
What do you do at FEA?
I am currently a Part II Architectural Assistant, having recently completed my Master of Architecture degree. I produce drawings for projects in various sectors such as education and residential.
Why do you love it?
The best part of architecture is the opportunity to create great, lasting spaces for people to enjoy.
I love that in architecture you have to use a range of skills, both, creative and technical, to achieve a great result. Each project comes with its own set of challenges and opportunities to work with so there is always something new to learn!
What would you be doing if you weren’t an architectural assistant?
This is a tricky one! If I didn’t study Architecture, I would’ve mostly likely studied Economics and pursued a job in that field. I’d love to be able to travel as part of work.
Our talented and dedicated team in Leicester are passionate about the city and its built environment. In addition, they are also a key part of our hospitality team delivering hotels for nationally recognised brands. Featured here are a selection of our projects either in Leicester, Leicestershire or completed by our Leicester team.
