How We Work

We aim to take our clients on a journey. We draw inspiration from the history, character, or quality of a space, building or local area to create an interior experience that tells a story. We combine textiles and materials with bespoke, modern finishes to create spaces that uplift and honour their setting. Starting with a concept, we develop tactile mood boards and sketches, before working with our in-house visualisation team to translate the space for our clients, providing a visual experience tailored to our client’s requirements.

Our Interiors team work collaboratively and creatively, both within the Franklin Ellis office and alongside outside consultants. We deliver specialised interior-focused projects and assist our Architectural division to provide a coordinated approach to design and implementation.

We create detailed, diverse, high-quality design concepts that excite and improve the well-being of all end users. Our experience covers a wide range of design sectors including hospitality, commercial offices, historic building interiors, schools and universities, and healthcare. Our team is fully BIM integrated, enabling them to translate interior packages into clear visuals and renders.

What do you do at FEA?

I am a Senior Interior Designer working with a team on hospitality, office and leisure projects from initial concept development stages to drawing packages and delivery on site. Liaising with clients and contractors, FF&E selection, visualisations and technical detailing are big part of my job.

Why do you love it?

I really enjoy the creative side of the profession because each project is unique with its own challenges, and how varied the tasks are depending on the design stage. I love concept development journey creating an authentic experience and atmosphere that instantly connects with a user and the place where it is located.

What would you be doing if you weren't an interior designer?

The other professional careers I would consider is psychology - I am really fascinated how human mind works; or a film director – I would love to be able to bring a story to an immersive visual form that has a power to change viewer’s perspective to life.

What do you do at FEA?

I work as a Interior Designer on a variety of hospitality projects, focusing on FF&E selection, developing detailed design, sourcing finishes, creating layouts, preparing presentations and concept mood boards.

Why do you love it?

As an Interior Designer I love the opportunity to be creative everyday at work. The process of designing spaces always brings challenges that helps me improve my skills and expand my knowledge.

What would you be doing if you weren't an interior designer?

I would definitely still want to be involved in designing, art and maybe even cuisine. Probably my next choice would be an art conservationist or a professional Chef and own a fine dining restaurant.

What do you do at FEA?

I head up a team focused on hospitality and leisure projects. The team comprises architects, interior designers and architectural technologists.

Why do you love it?

As an architect, I’m passionate about buildings and the built environment. In my job, I love the buzz of the office and being part of a big team of specialist designers and constructors working together to deliver complex buildings. It’s a great feeling to look up at a newly constructed building and know I played a part in bringing that building into being. The hotel and leisure sector is rooted in the guest experience inside the building, on making people feel comfortable, and providing a ‘wow factor’. Our clients are really excited about our projects and are always appreciative which is fantastic.

What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?

My children are currently travelling, which makes my wife and I want to visit some far-flung places like south-east Asia. But there is still so much to see in the UK, so perhaps I ought to be upgrading from leisurely rambles in the Peak District and Snowdonia to some more serious hiking in the Highlands!

What do you do at FEA?

I work as a Part 2 Architectural Assistant on a variety of hotel projects in the office, looking at all aspects of the job, from the external shell to the interior design details.

Why do you love it?

Every day brings on new challenges I haven't seen before. Solving them creates a satisfying feeling of self-improvement on a daily basis and it never gets boring!

What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?

I would always like to keep designing and creating - it makes me happy when things are in harmony together. Graphic Designer would be my next choice as I especially enjoy creating visually inspirational designs.

What do you do at FEA?

I am currently Senior Architect and Job Runner at Franklin Ellis. I have been at FEA since 2005 and have enjoyed a wide variety of projects ranging from pre-planning feasibility work to large scale developments. I also head the award-winning Architectural Visualisation team here, delivering photo realistic imagery ahead of on-site works.

Why do you love it?

I have always had a passion for design from a young age, but equally enjoy the practical side of construction. Architecture was the perfect balance of these skills and provides a variety of opportunities within the umbrella of construction.

What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?

If I am not designing, I am building. I could not limit myself to a particular trade and enjoy all aspects of on-site work. But if I had to select just one, I would be a carpenter.

What do you do at FEA?

I am a Director and I work on a range of high-profile schemes across the country within the leisure industry with a particular focus on hotels. Recently, I have been working on completing the exciting extensions to a DoubleTree by Hilton and two Holiday Inn Express hotels with the FEA team. We are also just about to start onsite in Chester on a 75-bedroom new build Indigo Hotel and in Barrow in Furness on a 119-bed Holiday Inn Express hotel – busy busy!

Why do you love it?

Above all I love design but I also enjoy the varied nature of the job. Each day brings different tasks and regularly challenges a different aspect of my expertise. I could be picking a brick colour, drawing a detail for a window, liaising with a planning officer or writing up meeting minutes.

What would you be doing if you weren’t an architect?

Playing golf, badly. Or, I’d be working in another design-related industry.

What do you do at FEA?

My role is BIM Manager, responsible for the development, application and curation of procedures that are in line with BIM principles and aim to help with the production of information. I’m in charge of training staff in the use of different software, mainly Revit and Lumion.

Why do you love it?

It is a very challenging position; it encourages me to be creative finding solutions to make all our processes better every day. Also, it gives me the chance to share with all the different teams in the office.

What would you be doing if you didn’t work in architecture?

I would probably work in something history or technology related. I think I would be either an historian or a software engineer.

Franklin Ellis Interiors offer a comprehensive range of design services from concept through to completion. Franklin Ellis is a digitally advanced practice, harnessing the latest workflows, BIM processes and visualisation techniques.

Concept Design

During this initial design stage, our Team meet with Clients to understand their needs and desires for a space. We aim to transform practical requirements into a comprehensive narrative, drawing inspiration from the history, character, or quality of a space. We produce mood boards and sketches to transform our vision into a tangible article and create an interior experience that tells a story.

Detailed Design

Our team translates initial concept design into a more detailed design including the specification of finishes, furnishings, flooring and fixtures. To communicate our developed design we produce great quality internal views using use Enscape 3D software. Subsequently the detailed design is captured in technical drawings and specifications for contractors. Our designers’ model in a BIM environment using Revit, allowing us to output technical drawings, schedules, rendered images and seamlessly leading to high-resolution visualisations.

Design Team Consultancy

We offer a Design Team Consultancy service, providing concept design and technical detail design. Our Interiors Team work independently and with other Designers and Architects to collaborate on diverse, high-quality design concepts, creating fresh and innovative spaces that improve the well-being of all end users. Our team have experience designing incredible spaces for clients such as Hilton, Marriott and Paul Smith on high-value projects up to £30M.

FF&E Specification

With three decades in the industry, we work closely with a network of suppliers. Our team have conducted large scale, detail-orientated specifications for large names in the hospitality, education and commercial industries, and offer a wealth of experience to provide our clients with the best value for their investment.

Visualisation

Our interior designers collaborate with our in-house visualisation team to produce high-quality CGI’s and renders. We stay ahead of the curve, offering our clients cutting edge images and fly-throughs that illustrate a finished product. We create a visual journey through the space including animations, virtual reality tours and photo-real marketing images.

BIM Integration

All Interior Design schemes are modelled in a BIM environment by our designers. We believe in maximising output and efficiency, using BIM to collaborate and coordinate with architects and contractors. We use BIM to translate concept and technical designs for our clients, enabling interior packages to be quickly translated into clear visuals and renders.
