Quality Management System: ISO 9001

Franklin Ellis have been awarded ISO 9001 accreditation, which recognises our determination to continually improve the consistency and efficiency of our processes.

FEA operates under the ISO 9001 Quality Management System. The standard reflects our determination to continually improve the consistency and efficiency of our processes and is reflected in all areas of FEA; from how we design and manage projects, office management, human resources, training and CPD.
Our mission is to deliver collaborative client-driven architectural designs and modern technical solutions that help shape the future through an exemplarily level of service; turning the client’s vision into reality, delivered on time, fit for purpose and to the highest standards.

By implementing the Quality Management System, our aim is to meet all applicable requirements and make continual improvements, based on well-defined and monitored systems and procedures and effective internal review processes. Our processes and procedures are subject to regular review to ensure their continued suitability, performance, and effectiveness. We undertake to ensure that sufficient resources are made available within the company to achieve this.

The aim of our Quality Management System is to address the principles and processes surrounding our design development and delivery of architectural services to our clients. All FEA projects are subject to strict design procedures. Each design is monitored through a Project Quality Plan, utilised in part to track our sustainability credentials, survey the efficiency of processes, and demonstrate strict adherence to industry regulation and standards. Our process tracks client feedback with the aim of continual improvement and prevention of non-conformances.
Partners undertake a hands-on operational role throughout the life of all projects, maintaining an involvement from concept to completion. The day to day running of the project is carried out by an Associate Partner / Associate, who is responsible for the efficient delivery and execution of each commission. Projects operate within agreed time limits, with the performance of individuals and teams regularly monitored, ensuring schemes are adequately and appropriately resourced at all stages.

All new staff are provided with comprehensive training and guidance until they are experienced in using FEA’s Quality Management system.

Sustainability Credential: ISO 14001

Franklin Ellis have been awarded ISO 14001 accreditation, which recognises our commitment to developing and maintaining environmentally conscious practices.

FEA are committed to developing and maintaining sustainable, environmentally conscious work practices in terms of internal operations, and contracted designs. We aim to reduce our environmental impact and maintain a healthy workplace for colleagues and visitors. We use best practices and operate in compliance with all relevant environmental legislation. FEA endeavour to continually improve environmental performance, and periodically review our environmental policy, setting new aims to improve our output. We commit to reducing pollution through the promotion and implementation of sustainable architecture.
We aim always to apply appropriate management principles in regard to our purchasing policy, energy management and waste reuse and recycling. Our staff are conscious of using environmentally responsible and energy efficient products and helping us to reduce waste through a purchasing policy prioritising recycled, recyclable or refurbished equipment.

As an organisation, we advocate for hybrid working, allowing staff to work both from home and the office as appropriate, with an aim of reducing unnecessary travel. We also support staff in cycling to work, providing secure cycle storage, showers and lockers. We encourage efficient use of heating, lighting, equipment, materials and resources including water, electricity, raw materials and other resources, particularly those that are non-renewable.

We recognise that the products of our designs have far more environmental impact than our office operations. Therefore, we are committed to exercising our professional skills to reduce the environmental impact of our designs as much as possible, within the instructions received from our clients.

FEA believes in the application of sustainable principles in planning and construction, in social and environmental terms, through strategic advice, design and specification. We aim to achieve optimum solutions for our clients and end users.

We aim to communicate our environmental commitment to clients and encourage their support while raising awareness of sustainability and environmental protection. We ensure that, where possible, building projects are supported by a travel plan that promotes sustainable travel choices through public transport and cycling provision. Sites are assessed for their ecological value and microclimate; to ensure buildings make best use of the natural features of the site including sun, wind and landscape and biodiversity is protected or enhanced.

We operate a ‘right-first-time’ culture for our production information, to avoid wasteful site reworking and consider efficient use of construction materials, specifying materials and components with the optimum balance between environmental impact and performance in use. We collaborate with other consultants, to ensure that building services are inherently efficient and controllable and confirm that buildings are commissioned fully before handover.

We promote environmental awareness among our staff and strive, together, to work in an environmentally responsible manner. All new staff are provided with training to bring them up to speed with FEA’s Environmental Policy and company ethos.
BIM Capability: ISO 19650

Franklin Ellis are ISO 19650 certified by the BRE. We have fully embraced BIM and have several years experience working on ISO 19650 project workflows.

Franklin Ellis have fully embraced BIM and have several years’ experience working on ISO 19650 project workflows (formerly ‘Level 2’ projects) with IFC and COBie handover. The company has transitioned fully to BIM workflows and software, with a large investment in hardware, applications and training since 2012. We have over 30 trained staff members working in BIM, a BIM Management team, together with documented procedures and workflows.

We model all projects from the smallest ‘lonely BIM’ scheme, to multi-million pound developments working to ISO19650 workflows. All architectural staff are BIM trained which gives us a broad capacity when approaching new projects. We are capable of acting as Lead Designer on BIM projects and taking the role of Model Manager or Information Manager as appropriate. We have our own BEP templates or can collaborate on other formats. We are experienced in producing COBie and IFC data on large projects.

Our Digital Design Team meets manage workflows and schedule training. We maintain an internal system of BIM Procedures to document and implement our methods and workflows. Our procedures are based on ISO 19650 and we are ISO 19650 certified by the BRE.

Software & Platforms

Our primary design application is Autodesk Revit and all models are hosted on Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) [formerly BIM360]. We use the ACC Design Collaboration and Model Coordination modules to collaborate with other consultants on our models. All of our projects have an integrated NBS Chorus (Uniclass) specification directly connected to the Revit model.

We use Enscape, TwinMotion and Lumion software for walkthroughs and presentations, and 3DS Max for photo-real rendering. We have an internal PIM (Project Information Management) system and an internal DMS (Document management System) using Deltek PIM. We are also experienced at working on 3rd party CDEs, such as Viewpoint 4 Projects.

Architectural: modelling from Inception (Stage 0) to Handover (Stage 6), federation and coordination of models, clash detection and reporting, point cloud commissioning and integration, publishing to a CDE in native, PDF, IFC or COBie formats, component (family) authoring, CDM integration with BIM, assistance with AIM/FM integration.

Information Management: CDE hosting and management, BEP authoring and project set up, including LOD and DRM, tables, TIDP templates, hosting and chairing model meetings, BIM capability assessments, defining and managing exchange processes.

Training is paramount to successful BIM. We train using internal or external trainers as appropriate, with frequent, scheduled and on-demand training sessions. Self-paced training and eLearning are also employed. Staff have direct access to our internal BIM Procedures system which documents all of our workflows and methods. We currently have around 30 architectural staff who are BIM trained.
