The ‘Hospice Within A Hospital’ is the result of a unique partnership between St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice, United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust and Lincolnshire South West Clinical Commissioning Group, who pooled their expertise in order to create a purpose-designed six-bed in-patient unit within the hospital campus, the first such facility within the UK.
The project involved the extensive refurbishment and extension of an existing ward to create six en-suite rooms, together with a welcoming reception area, children’s play area, a quiet room, relatives room and private gardens.
Franklin Ellis assisted with the grant application to Help the Hospices and acted as lead consultant to the project. In addition, FEA’s interior and landscape designers collaborated with staff, volunteers and stakeholders to create an appropriate and welcoming environment in which to provide palliative care.
