Franklin Ellis oversaw the restoration and conversion of Early Georgian Grade II* Listed Willoughby House from offices to retail providing bespoke accommodation for fashion designer Paul Smith.

The Paul Smith flagship store, winner of both The Lord Mayor’s Award for Conservation and Overall Building of the Year 2005, is a superb shopping experience set into a Grade II* Listed Georgian building in the centre of Nottingham. Originally built as a house for Rothwell Willoughby in 1738 and more recently converted into offices, the approach to the design was to retain as much historic fabric as possible. Therefore, work was confined to removing previous alterations to the internal layout and reinstating many of the original features. These include the fireplaces, cornices, doors and casings, windows and shutters, timber panelling and the original staircase.
