Franklin Ellis designed the Greenwood Road school complex for Nottingham Academy in conjunction with Nottingham City Council as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme.

The development provides exciting modern educational facilities for 1,920 pupils ranging from pre-school and reception classes up to secondary school age 11 all on the one site, with the ability for students to progress onto further education facilities on the linked Sneinton Dale school site providing a fully integrated educational pathway. Facilities include: specialist ICT suites, library, technology and arts studios, CAD-CAM, science labs, performing arts, sports hall, multi-use games area and sports pitches, primary play areas and green roof and wildlife areas.

The building layout is essentially two interlinked courtyards forming the primary and secondary elements either side of a central hub comprising of the main administration areas.

A variety of articulated materials and the use of different colours help to create both a lively building and one of an appropriate scale and massing. The scale is further broken down in the primary school area and nursery to create a series of non-institutional individual buildings. The building achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
