Optimising and Streamlining our Revit Workflow

At Franklin Ellis, we are committed to continuously improving how we deliver projects through digital innovation. Central to this commitment is our BIM support team, who actively leverage technology to optimise workflows, enhance data management, and strengthen multidisciplinary coordination across our architecture and interior design projects. Digital delivery is not simply about adopting software, it’s about unlocking its full potential.

Extending the Power of Autodesk Revit with Dynamo
One of the key tools supporting our approach is Dynamo, a built-in visual programming environment within Autodesk Revit. Powered by DesignScript and supporting Python integration, Dynamo transforms Revit from a modelling platform into a programmable BIM environment capable of automation, advanced data manipulation, and rule-based design logic.

By leveraging Dynamo, we are able to extend Revit beyond its out-of-the-box functionality and tailor workflows to suit the specific needs of our projects.

Smarter, Scalable BIM Processes
Through Dynamo, our BIM team can:

– Automate repetitive modelling and documentation tasks
– Manage and validate large volumes of project data
– Embed ISO 19650 standards directly into our workflows
– Develop rule-based, scalable BIM processes

This not only reduces manual effort but also improves consistency, accuracy, and overall project efficiency. By embedding standards and logic into our systems, compliance becomes an integrated part of the workflow rather than an additional administrative step.

Automating Drawing Outputs with Intelligent Logic
A recent in-house development demonstrates this approach in action. Our team created a custom-built, rule-based Dynamo script that extracts drawing parameters directly from the model and applies conditional logic to automate batch PDF and DWG generation using our ISO 19650-compliant naming conventions.

This development helps to:

– Streamline background processes
– Reduce the risk of human error
– Improve consistency across deliverables
– Save valuable project time

By automating drawing outputs, we ensure our teams can focus more on design coordination and quality, while maintaining robust compliance and data integrity.

The Future of Intelligent BIM Delivery
While automation is a significant benefit, Dynamo also enables us to explore parametric and rule-driven design solutions while maintaining full BIM intelligence. This allows us to test options efficiently, manage complex geometries, and retain structured, usable data within the model.

Our BIM support team continues to expand and refine our in-house tools, strengthening integration across our projects and driving continuous improvement in digital delivery. At Franklin Ellis, innovation is not an add-on, it’s embedded in how we think, design, and deliver.
