St. Barnabas Hospice – Barrowby Road
Grantham

St Barnabas Day Centre on Barrowby Road was formally a hotel situated on the edge of Grantham town centre and was originally opened as the GIFTS (Grantham Initiative for Terminal Care Support),”. The project involved the construction of a single-storey extension to the existing day-care facilities to improve the current facilities and enable the hospice to introduce services to patients with complex health needs.

The proposal created a new open, light and welcoming entrance, leading to the existing building and new accommodation of a large, open plan lounge/dining area, arts and craft room and kitchenette. A new patio and courtyard provide valuable external space with views and access to the existing gardens.

The scheme also included the modernisation of the existing building, which had dated fixtures and fittings, with dark wood panelling on many of the walls, creating a dark and claustrophobic atmosphere.

The refurbishment and new extension have created a light and airy atmosphere, much more fitting for a health care establishment. A simple glazed link connects the existing building and the new facilities which are housed in a vertical hung tile enclosure, sitting on a render plinth. Full height glazed corners to the tiled element provide light and views across the garden. A clean, simple appearance and material palette sympathetic to the original building tie together the old and the new.
