Franklin Ellis Architects were appointed by Wavensmere Homes to transform the historic site of the former Milford Mill into a vibrant residential community. This project will deliver 69 residential units on the site of the 18th-century cotton mill, located on the picturesque banks of the River Derwent, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A Heritage Site with Modern Living
The Milford Mill site is steeped in history, and its transformation comes with unique challenges and opportunities. The project requires close consultation with the Local Authority to navigate an extensive list of planning conditions, ensuring the development respects and enhances the site’s historical significance.
Preserving and Enhancing Historical Features
Key areas of the site will be retained and enhanced to celebrate its rich heritage. The original stone boundary walls will be preserved, and the wheel pit area will be highlighted as a focal point. Reclaimed stone paving will be used on the footprint of the original mill building, creating a tangible connection to the past. This historic core will serve as a key social space within the development, fostering a sense of community and continuity.

Quality Materials Reflecting Heritage
The development will feature high-quality building materials, including natural stone and slate, which reflect the site’s historical context. These materials ensure durability and a connection to the architectural heritage of the area.
Cutting-Edge Visualisation
Industry-leading 3D visualisation techniques have been employed to convey the quality and materiality of the project, showcasing how the new residential units will integrate with the historical elements of the site.
The Milford Mill residential development is a testament to the harmonious blend of history and modern living
