Inspiring Future Designers at Willow Farm Primary School

At Franklin Ellis Architects, we believe that creating a positive impact extends beyond the buildings we design.

Our Associate Director Luke Turner recently visited Years 4, 5 and 6 pupils at Willow Farm Primary School to deliver an engaging workshop focused on architecture, creativity, and the built environment.

The session, Designing the World Around Us, was designed to introduce pupils to the exciting world of architecture while encouraging imagination, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Encouraging Creativity Through Architecture

The workshop introduced pupils to the many ways architecture shapes everyday life, from homes and schools to hospitals, libraries, playgrounds, and workplaces. Through interactive presentations and discussions, students explored the different roles within an architectural practice, including architects, architectural technologists, technicians, and interior designers.

By showcasing how creativity and technical thinking work together within the industry, the session aimed to inspire young people to think differently about the spaces around them and the opportunities available within design and construction careers. Pupils also learned about the tools architects use every day, including Computer Aided Design (CAD), physical models, animation, and virtual reality technology.

Bringing Ideas to Life
A key part of the day was the hands-on “Design Your Treehouse” activity, where pupils were encouraged to become architects themselves. Using a creative worksheet, students considered everything from how their treehouse would stay safe and protected from the weather to what unique features and rooms it might include.

The activity sparked fantastic discussions and imaginative ideas throughout the classroom. Pupils designed spaces with reading corners, lookout towers, slides, rope swings, secret rooms, and sustainable features, while also thinking carefully about safety, structure, and comfort. It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm and creativity shown by every student involved.

Alongside the workshop activities, our team brought architectural models and industry equipment into the classroom to help provide a real insight into the profession. This hands-on approach helped make the experience both educational and memorable for the pupils.
