Franklin Ellis were appointed as Architects and Interior Designers by Castlebridge Group to design a new build four-star 75 key IHG Indigo Hotel in the heart of Chester city centre.

Our brief was to maximise guestroom accommodation within a tight city-centre site while creating a distinctive hotel that responds sensitively to its historic surroundings. Located within a conservation area and adjacent to several listed buildings, including a church, the design needed to be sympathetic in scale, character and detailing while delivering a contemporary, bespoke building.

The interior design concept tells the story of the neighbourhood, drawing on Chester’s rich and varied history and celebrating the distinctive qualities that give the city its unique identity and enduring appeal.

Three individual guestroom design narratives were developed, each inspired by an aspect of the hotel’s remarkable surroundings: the historic Chester Rows; the Roodee, England’s oldest racecourse; and the iconic Eastgate Clock. These references are interpreted through colour, pattern, materials and detailing to create guestrooms with a strong sense of place.

The design language established within the guestrooms continues throughout the reception, bar and The Forge, the hotel’s AA two-Rosette restaurant. With 95 covers, a private dining room and an open kitchen, The Forge forms a key part of the guest experience, bringing together the hotel’s locally inspired interiors with a distinctive contemporary dining offer.
