BIM is at the core of our design processes and is used from the very start of a project, right through to handover. 100% of our projects are modelled, enabling us to understand sites better and to ensure coordination is effective. Having 3D modelled our projects for over 15 years, our BIM transition was a natural progression.

All of our design staff are BIM trained and use it daily – we have no split between designers and technical staff. We also have several years’ experience working on ‘Level 2’ projects as defined in PAS1192-2 with IFC and COBie handover.

We are recognised as leaders in BIM and have been consulted by major UK suppliers on their own BIM transitions. We work with the NBS in the beta programme for development of Revit integration with NBS Create, and are involved in the beta programmes of several Autodesk packages. We publish a BIM blog and run an internal BIM wiki service on which we host our BIM standards and procedures. We were early adopters of VR headsets, walkthrough software and cloud rendering.
Working with BIM and instant rendering technology allows us to rapidly iterate our designs for clients, to achieve sign-off more quickly. We give our clients a far better understanding of their buildings than was previously possible. There is no ‘overhead’ to visualisation of our projects because it is fully integrated into our design workflow.

Collaborating in 3D allows us to achieve better and earlier coordination of the discipline models. Steelwork and services clashes in particular are a common source of site delays and re-designs, and BIM allows us to pick up clashes before the project hits site. Better coordination saves time and money.

Franklin Ellis have fully embraced BIM and have several years’ experience working on ‘Level 2’ projects as defined in PAS1192-2. The company has transitioned fully to BIM workflows and software, with a large investment in hardware, applications and training. We have 40 trained staff members working in BIM, a BIM Management team, together with documented procedures and workflows.
We model all projects from the smallest ‘lonely BIM’ scheme, to multi-million pound developments working at Level 2. All architectural staff are BIM trained which gives us a broad capacity when approaching new projects. We are capable of acting as Lead Designer on Level 2 projects and taking the role of Model Manager or Information Manager as appropriate. We have our own BEP templates or can collaborate on other formats such as the CPIx version. We are experienced in producing COBie and IFC data on large projects.
Training is paramount to successful BIM. We train using internal or external trainers as appropriate, with frequent, often weekly, training sessions. Self-paced training and eLearning are also employed. Staff have one-click access to our BIM wiki which documents all of our workflows and procedures. We currently have around 40 staff who are BIM trained, across our Nottingham and Leicester offices.
Our BIM Management Team meets monthly, to plan training and resourcing. We maintain a BIM wiki to host our standards, procedures and workflows. Our standards are based on documents such as BS1192, PAS1192 part 2 and the AEC (UK) BIM Technology Protocol.
Our primary design application is Autodesk Revit. For IFC federation and clash detection we use both Tekla BIMsight and Autodesk Navisworks. For BIM-integrated specification writing we use NBS Create software. We use Lumion software for walkthroughs and presentations, and Cinema 4D for photo-real rendering. We have our own FTP based extranet server, and we also use Autodesk 360, 4Projects (Viewpoint) and Sharepoint. We use Deltek PIM (formerly Union Square) as our document management system.
Architectural: modelling from Inception (Stage 0) to Handover (Stage 6), federation and coordination of models, clash detection and reporting, point cloud commissioning and integration, publishing to a CDE in native, PDF, IFC or COBie formats, component (family) authoring, CDM integration with BIM, assistance with AIM/FM integration.

Information Management: CDE hosting and management, BEP authoring and project set up, including LOD and DRM, tables, TIDP templates, hosting and chairing model meetings, BIM capability assessments, defining and managing exchange processes.
