Planning Granted in Surbiton

November 14th, 2011

Planning permission has been recently achieved for two projects for Surbiton High School and Rowan School.  The extension to the Boys Prep School is a two storey extension to the rear of the school providing two new classrooms, an office, toilets and medical room.  The new building is set half a storey below ground to meet the existing lower ground floor level and replaces a dilapidated temporary classroom.  The original building is a converted house, located in a local conservation area and is itself recognised as a ‘building of architecture merit’ by the local authority.  The extension mixes traditional forms and materials with a large feature rear facing glazed wall that allows natural light to enter the classrooms at both levels.  A sunken terrace is created to maximise daylight into the lower floor and provide an area for supervised external learning.  The size and roof form of the extension have been carefully modelled to retain the daylight and amenity to the adjoining owners property whilst maximising the floor area for the school.  The project is due to start on site in December.

The second site for Rowan and Surbiton High School is the creation of outdoor sports facilities on Oaken Lane in Hinchley Wood.  Permission has been achieved to construct a full size floodlit astro turf hockey pitch, 3 tennis courts and a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) on the site of a former garden centre.  These projects further our successful working relationship with Surbiton High School and the United Church Schools Trust.
