The first large scale Home Zone in Leicestershire is approaching completion thanks to a partnership between William Davis Ltd and Franklin Ellis. The development for Nottingham Community Housing Association is under construction on the former railway sidings at Loughborough. The mixed tenure scheme includes 59 houses and 32 apartments, plus a new boulevard style road and railway station forecourt. The tree lined boulevard leads to a large scale Home Zone, where the principles of shared space reduce the dominance of the car in favour of other users. The narrow streets allow for play, walking and cycling alongside the residents-only car access to their houses. The scheme christened ‘Eastern Gateway’ forms a prominent new backdrop to the station area and the approach into town. Completion is scheduled for early next year, in time for the arrival of Great Britain and Japan’s 2012 Olympic teams who are being hosted at the town’s University.
